Local All Star Hockey Tournament shot by Coast Mountain Photography

The Whistler All Star Hockey Tournament, organized and ran by Whistler locals Kevin and Jenn Sopp, is currently in the midst of its 15th annual tournament.

The tournament hosts players of all ages, from Novice to Midget leagues, from all around the world. The tournament hosts primarily players and teams from Canada and USA, although teams have travelled from as far as China in the past to be a part of the tournament.

Originally starting back in 1992, the WASHT hosted just 20 teams. It has since hosted as many as 69 teams over the years, and currently has 55 teams confirmed for this year’s event, as interest in Hockey in the Whistler and surrounding areas continues to grow.

With a tournament of its size and reputation, there has been no lack of promising young players stepping on the ice to take part. Perhaps most notable - Nashville Predators’ Ryan Johansen, of whom just competed for the Stanley Cup against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Other notable players include Whistler native Garett Milan, who now plays professionally in Europe. Will and Beck Warm, Stuart Skinner and Jackson Leppard, all of whom are currently playing in the WHL. And finally, Jordie Bellerive who hopes to be drafted into the NHL this weekend at the NHL draft in Chicago.

The tournament kicked off this year with the Major Bantam division on June 16, and will conclude with the Minor Atom division on July 9th. All games are played at Meadow Park Sports Centre and are free for all to attend.  Coast Mountain Photography will be on the scene capturing custom action sports photography for the players and teams as we have for 10 years running.

Congratulations to the Sopp family for their continued support of minor hockey and providing a great venue for so many out of town and local hockey teams.
